iTypePrivacy Policy
The short version. iType listens only while you're dictating, sends that audio to a speech-recognition service to turn it into text, and discards it. We do not store your audio or your transcripts. We keep the minimum needed to run your account: who you are and how many seconds you dictated.
What iType does
iType is a voice keyboard. When you hold or tap the dictation key, it streams microphone audio to our server, which forwards it to a speech-recognition provider and streams the recognised text back to your device, where it is typed into the app you are using.

What we don't do
- We don't record when you're not dictating. On Mac and Android the microphone opens only while you dictate. On iPhone, a keyboard session keeps the mic open but discards everything until you tap 🎤 (see "iPhone keyboard sessions").
- We don't keep audio or transcripts on our servers.
- We don't dictate into password fields.
- We don't sell or share personal data with advertisers, and we don't show ads.
- We don't read the content of the fields you type into, other than the text iType itself inserts.
Service providers
- Meta Platforms — speech recognition. Audio is sent to Meta's speech-to-text API for transcription. Meta's handling of that data is governed by Meta's terms.
- Clerk — authentication (email codes, GitHub or Google sign-in).
- Cloudflare — hosts our relay server, website and database.
Permissions
- Microphone — required to dictate.
- Internet — to reach the transcription service.
- macOS Accessibility — used only to type the recognised text into the active app.
- Android keyboard (input method) — required for any keyboard app. Android shows a standard warning that a keyboard may collect what you type; iType only inserts text and does not log keystrokes.
iPhone keyboard sessions
iOS does not allow third-party keyboards to use the microphone. To dictate from the iType keyboard, the iType app holds the microphone open in the background during a session you start (15 minutes, 1 hour, 4 hours, or until you end it). iOS shows its orange microphone indicator for the whole session.
This is not listening. While a session is active but you aren't dictating, audio is captured only to keep the app ready and is discarded immediately on the device — it is never streamed, transcribed or stored. Audio leaves your phone only between the moment you tap 🎤 on the keyboard and the moment you tap stop. You can end a session at any time from the app.
Your choices
- Sign out on any device to revoke that device's access.
- Clear Insights at any time in Settings → Privacy (macOS), the Insights tab (iPhone) or the Privacy card (Android) — that removes them from your account and every device.
- To delete your account and all associated data: on iPhone, Settings → Delete account (immediate). Elsewhere, contact us (below) from the email address on the account and we delete within 30 days.
Children
iType is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect data from them.
