The short version. iType listens only while you're dictating, sends that audio to a speech-recognition service to turn it into text, and discards it. We do not store your audio or your transcripts. We keep the minimum needed to run your account: who you are and how many seconds you dictated.
iType is a voice keyboard. When you hold or tap the dictation key, it streams microphone audio to our server, which forwards it to a speech-recognition provider and streams the recognised text back to your device, where it is typed into the app you are using.
| Data | Why | Where it goes | Kept |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microphone audio (only while dictating) | To transcribe your speech | Streamed through our relay to the speech-recognition provider (Meta Platforms' speech API) | Not stored by us. Processed in real time and discarded. |
| Transcribed text | To type it on your device | Returned to your device only | Not stored by us. |
| Account identity (email, sign-in provider id) | To sign you in and apply your plan | Our authentication provider (Clerk) and our database | While your account exists |
| Usage metering (seconds of audio per session, timestamps, device name) | Plan quotas, abuse prevention, billing | Our database | While your account exists |
| Language settings, vocabulary hints | To improve recognition of names and terms you add | Sent with each session; stored on your device | On your device until you change them |
| Recent dictations (the text, on macOS only) | The Home screen's history list with one-click copy | Nowhere โ kept on your Mac only, never uploaded | Until you delete an entry, clear the list, or turn "Keep a history of my dictations" off in Settings โ Privacy |
| Insights (word counts, dictation times, app names โ never the text) | To show you your own statistics on every device you sign in on | Our database, linked to your account, so every device you sign in on shows the same numbers | Until you clear them in Settings (Clear removes them from every device) or delete your account |
iOS does not allow third-party keyboards to use the microphone. To dictate from the iType keyboard, the iType app holds the microphone open in the background during a session you start (15 minutes, 1 hour, 4 hours, or until you end it). iOS shows its orange microphone indicator for the whole session.
This is not listening. While a session is active but you aren't dictating, audio is captured only to keep the app ready and is discarded immediately on the device โ it is never streamed, transcribed or stored. Audio leaves your phone only between the moment you tap ๐ค on the keyboard and the moment you tap stop. You can end a session at any time from the app.
